Government celebrates International Mountain Day 2015

19/12/2015

The Government of Bangladesh celebrated International Mountain Day for the third time on 11 December 2015, on the theme of Promoting Mountain Products. Events began with the opening of the Mountain Products Fair on the site of the new building to be developed to house the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (MoCHTA) and a CHT cultural centre in Dhaka. There followed a rally, and the morning culminated in a seminar with speeches from , Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, MP, Honourable State Minister of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, and Rashed Khan Menon, Hon'ble Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism at CIRDAP International Conference Centre, as well as a number of technical speakers from academics, NGOs and development agencies in a technical session chaired by the Secretary, MoCHTA.

The FAO representative stressed the need to build market linkages – and not simply produce in the hope of making a sale. He cited the example of work done on mango export in other parts of the country during 2015, to bring together buyers and producers to improve understanding of each others needs and constraints. That experience had resulted in successful export of mango to UK based chain shops run by Walmart. He also emphasized the importancve of energy in the cold chain and for processing, storage and transport, a point also stressed by Nick Virr, of Renewable World, a UK based clean energy promoting NGO which has been developing projects specifically for CHT.
