World Food Day 2023 shines a spotlight on water as the foundation for life and food. Water is vital to all species and to all ecosystem functions and services which are essential to food and agriculture. In turn, a myriad of species and ecological processes influence the quality and quantity of water.  

Recognizing the role of biodiversity for food security and nutrition is a key step towards the transformation of agrifood systems. In 2022, up to 783 million people were affected by hunger, and hundreds of millions more lacked access to healthy, nutritious diets. Sustainably using biodiversity can contribute towards the resilience, efficiency and sustainability of agrifood systems, while addressing climate change and ecosystem degradation; thereby helping to achieve food security and nutrition for present and future generations.
