The background document for the upcoming FAO e-mail conference (14 June to 11 July 2004) entitled "Biotechnology applications in food processing: Can developing countries benefit?" is now available. It aims to give a short, easily-understandable overview of the application of biotechnology to the processing of food (including beverages) produced from agriculture. It provides an introduction to the subject, describes the current status of biotechnology in food processing and, finally, considers some areas specifically relevant to developing countries.
