Brussels press briefing on the launch of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021

12/07/2021

There was a dramatic worsening of world hunger in 2020, the United Nations said today - much of it likely related to the fallout of COVID-19. While the pandemic's impact has yet to be fully mapped, a multi-agency report estimates that around a tenth of the global population - up to 811 million people - were undernourished last year. The number suggests it will take a tremendous effort for the world to honour its pledge to end hunger by 2030.

This year's edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World is the first global assessment of its kind in the pandemic era. The rport is being published by five UN agencies collaboratively.

In Brussels, Rodrigo de Lapuerta,  Director a.i. of the Liaison Office with the European Union and Belgium, was joined by WFP Director in Brussels Alzira Ferreira and Leonard Mizzi, Head of Unit for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems and Fisheries at the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships. Together with the authors of the report Jose Rosero Moncayo, Director of the FAO Statistics Division and Carlo Cafiero, FAO Senior Statistician took questions from the press in a lively discussion that addressed the challenges the newly released numbers are posing for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
