21 February 2022, Libreville - The FAO Sub-regional Office for Central Africa and the eight Country Representations of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are organizing their 14th Multidisciplinary Team Meeting (MDT).

This annual FAO event in the sub-region will be held as a hybrid event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants will join both face-to-face in countries and online via zoom between countries.

The meeting will have the theme "Unleashing the potential of youth and women to make food systems more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable in Central Africa", and will bring together the governments of the eight countries of the subregion,  sub-regional economic integration organizations (ECCAS), the Network of Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition for Central Africa, development partners, civil society and the private sector, to define the way forward for the coming years.

Central Africa is a region of ever-changing challenges and opportunities. In 2021, more than 52 million people in the sub-region were still suffering from hunger, with 32.1% of children under 5 years of age stunted, high unemployment among youth and women, and high dependence on food imports.

However, Central Africa has a large population of young people and women whose contribution to the production, processing, conservation, distribution and use of food resources is well documented.

During the three days’ session, participants will explore opportunities for developing partnerships and mobilizing resources to meet the challenges of empowering youth and women in Central Africa to better adapt and support food systems transformation in Central Africa, in order to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

As part of FAO Director General’s vision, the event will focus on the new strategic framework of the Organization, which aims to help countries achieve Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and a Better Life for all, leaving no one behind.

The meeting will be organized around four (4) thematic sessions, preceded by a high-level session to address the preparations for the 32nd Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa, sub-regional priorities and an inaugural presentation on the political approach to the economic inclusion of youth and women.

The meeting documentation will be in French. Interpretation will be provided in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
