26/05/2017

Beijing — In order to meet the world’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, sharing governance solutions and good practices will be a major factor in eradicating poverty, delegates at an international forum heard today.

The 2017 China Poverty Reduction International Forum, with the theme of “Developing and Sharing Governance Solutions to Reduce Poverty”, held today in Beijing,  was co-hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the China Internet Information Center (CIIC), International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC), World Bank, and Asian Development Bank (ADB).

More than one-hundred delegates from seven countries, including government officials and representatives from international organizations, academia, and private sector participated in the event.

The discussions focused on ways to develop and share the best practices of China in poverty alleviation, in order to help other developing countries eliminate poverty. The forum also introduced innovative tools and new developments in the fight against poverty.

Vincent Martin, FAO Representative in China and DPR Korea, called for an acceleration in the implementation of good practices to achieve the global eradication of extreme poverty. He pointed to the successes of south-south cooperation as an example of ways to implement better governance.  “In order for us to realize a world where no one is left behind, poverty reduction policies and know-how generated in China and elsewhere should be made available to the international community. This is a key step to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” Martin said

Poverty reduction and South-South Cooperation are both priorities of the Country Programming Framework 2016-2020 of FAO China. To this end, FAO is strengthening its cooperation with partners, and jointly exploring innovative ways to promote knowledge-sharing on poverty alleviation with developing countries.

Knowledge-sharing platform launched

During the forum, the Global Poverty Reduction Online Knowledge Sharing Database was launched. The database aims to systematically document poverty reduction good practices. Designed for worldwide users, professionals working in the field will all be able to upload and share their poverty reduction practices through the platform.

In addition, FAO, together with CIIC, released a video on innovation in poverty reduction knowledge sharing, exploring new ways to promote south-south cooperation on poverty reduction.

Over the years, China has made remarkable achievements in poverty reduction and accumulated a number of good practices, especially since China launched the battle to eradicate poverty in 2015. In this endeavor, China promotes sharing and learning with other developing countries and international organizations. By actively implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, China will make a greater contribution to the global goal of eradicating extreme poverty.
