Description: This side event will use case studies across different regions to highlight the contribution of women’s initiatives and enterprises in sustainable livestock transformation and its development outcomes.   

Focusing on the thematic area “Sustainable livestock systems for food security, nutrition and inclusive economic growth”, the event will highlight the crucial role that women play within pastoralist and other livestock-keeping communities, more so now than in the past, within an even-faster rate of change in the environment, economies, and society.

Description: Since its First Session in 2022, the Sub-Committee has been discussing the development of a dedicated voluntary guidance tool for the sustainable enhancement of small-scale livestock productivity. It will feature global, regional and national instruments and options – including from other sectors – which contributed to improving the livelihoods and resilience of small-scale producers.

Description: Livestock plays an important role in cycling nutrients, feeding soil microorganisms, and improving the aggregation and structure of soils, leading to healthier ecosystems that in turn support healthier diets.  This side event will explore actions to support soil health that include diverse ruminant systems to further healthy soils, biodiversity and nutrient adequate diets. Soils management underpins our land-based ecosystems, can impact our marine ecosystems, and thus provides our food system with multiple benefits.

Description: This session will highlight technical practices that can address both mitigation and adaptation objectives, while outlining potential synergies and tradeoffs. However, successful adaptation and mitigation requires that practices also appeal to producers’ socio-economic objectives for profitability and productivity. In addition to identifying technical practices to achieve climate change mitigation and adaptation, this session will elaborate mechanisms to promote socio-economically inclusive scaling of climate solutions in the livestock sector. 

Agenda: The session will open with a keynote presentation that lays out a range of issues relating to the session topic. This will be followed by a facilitated panel discussion.

Description: With more than 1.3 billion people relying on livestock for their livelihoods and food security there is an urgent need to prioritize actions and policies targeting agriculture induced AMR.  As highlighted by the AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform, improved animal health and welfare plays an important role in reducing the need for antibiotics and promoting responsible use. 

With the FAO RENOFARM initiative launched and the UNGA High-Level Meeting on AMR set for September, the side event will examine effective and humane pathways to better manage this silent epidemic.
