FAO in North Macedonia
The partnership between FAO and North Macedonia has grown steadily since the country became a member of the Organization in 1993. Cooperation has spanned a wide array of areas, including structural land reforms such as land consolidation and other land market instruments, integrated local community development, value chains, animal health management, food safety and quality, climate change adaptation in agriculture, and the sustainable management of natural resources, including land, water, forests, and biodiversity. It has also focused on promoting climate-smart agriculture and agroecology. There has been a continual emphasis on policy and institutional support, with a focus on aligning the country’s agriculture and rural sectors with European Union standards and the Sustainable Development Goals. FAO Priorities in North Macedonia
North Macedonia’s Country Programming Framework (CPF) for the period 2021–2025 serves as FAO’s strategic planning and programming document to address the challenges facing the country’s agrifood system. The CPF is closely aligned with North Macedonia's key policy documents and sector-specific plans, including the National Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development 2021–2027, the European Union Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA) III Rural Development Programme (IPARD) 2021–2027, and the National Development Strategy. The CPF fully aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2021–2025 and the FAO Strategic Framework for 2022-2031, aiming to advance agricultural development, empower smallholders and family farms, and invest in a sustainable, food-secure future for the people of North Macedonia.
