Conakry, December 6, 2023_As part of the implementation of the ARPA project: "Strengthening One Health and Biosecurity for National and Producer Resilience - Preventing National and Global Emergency Threats", the project's national coordination organized a workshop to introduce stakeholders to the FAO's Progressive Management of Terrestrial Animal Biosecurity "PMP-TAB" process; assess its level of application in the poultry sector; and agree on biosecurity standards for the sector.
The FAO promotes biosecurity as an all-encompassing term that includes policy and regulation aimed at protecting agriculture, food and the environment from biological hazards. The principles of biosecurity are shared by the One Health concept, and the two concepts should be implemented concomitantly, particularly with regard to collaboration and cooperation between sectors to prevent and control the spread of pathogens.
The Progressive Management of Terrestrial Animal Biosecurity, developed by the FAO and proposed to countries, is a collaborative, step-by-step approach to assessing and managing biological risks. Implementation of this approach is supported by the provision of appropriate tools with shared public-private responsibilities. It is a set of mechanisms to identify and mitigate biosecurity risks, support the implementation of biosecurity improvements, including governance and regulatory mechanisms to monitor, measure and sustain progress.
