Gateway to dairy production and products

Newly opened Tajik dairy marks a milestone in milk processing

The Murghab district is populated by semi-nomadic communities, mostly of Kyrgyz origin. People living in the highlands of the province are among the poorest in the former Soviet Union. Horticulture is not practiced due to the harsh climate, and practically the only source of income comes from livestock: yaks, sheep and goats.
The official ceremony on August 21st marked a milestone for Murghab, Tajikistan: the opening of the district’s only processing company. The newly formed LLC “Zengi Baba” is the country’s first producer of dairy products from yak milk.
The dairy shop is a result of a training course organized by FAO, under the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU) Agrarian Structures Initiative, as part of the technical assistance tailored to support the formation of a yak herders group in GBAO. Its main goal was to link yak herders in remote mountain areas of Tajikistan to the markets in the capital city by advancing yak products value chains.
