The Kyrgyz Republic, a landlocked, mountainous Central Asian country, relies heavily on agriculture, especially in its rural areas, which are home to 62 percent of the population. Agriculture in Kyrgyzstan is predominantly family-based, and focuses on the small-scale cultivation of such crops as potatoes, sugar beet, maize and wheat, as well as animal husbandry. In recent years, Kyrgyzstan has witnessed a significant shift towards digitalization, propelled by the National Digital Transformation Programme “Taza Koom” and the Digital Kyrgyzstan Concept for 2019–2023. While digital platforms such as the State Electronic Services Portal “Tunduk” and the Sanarip Aimak information management system have eased the delivery of public services, the agricultural sector is lagging in its acceptance of digitalization, resulting in opportunities for socio-economic growth and development remaining untapped.
FAO has been instrumental in driving the digitalization of agriculture in Kyrgyzstan, as evidenced by its joint development with IFAD of the Concept for the Development of Digital Agriculture. Through its Digital Villages Initiative, FAO is promoting the adoption of a Farmers Service Centre model for the digital provision of public services to farmers. To enhance the management of irrigation water, water level measuring sensors have been installed in villages in the Kochkor district.
