Bilateral meeting with the Minister for Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture of the Maldives - H.E. Hussain Rasheed Hassan

Rome - The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, Minister for Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture of the Maldives, on the margins of the 43rd Session of the FAO Conference.

The Minister congratulated the Director-General for his successful re-election, and said he looked forward to working with him in his second term. In particular, the Minister thanked the Director-General for that full-time national consultant that was appointed by FAO, following the Director-General’s visit to the Maldives in 2021, to enable better coordination between the Government and FAO. He further provided an overview of the main challenges the Maldives is currently facing and the policies in place to address them, and requested FAO’s support in this regard.

The Director-General thanked the Minister for the continued collaboration and reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to support the Maldives to transform its agrifood systems, as well as with improving climate-resilient agriculture and fisheries.

Furthermore, the pair agreed to continue collaborating on, among others, drafting an investment plan, adapting new technology such as semi-hydroponic system, green house, and valuable agro-production.
