Bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Iraq – H.E. Abdul Latif Rashid

Rome – The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met with H.E. Abdul Latif Rashid, President of the Republic of Iraq.

The Director General welcomed the President of Iraq to FAO and appreciated his participation in the World Food Forum.

The Director-General reiterated FAO’s support for the Government's efforts to transform its agrifood systems and address the different challenges facing the agriculture sector, including water scarcity and drought.

The President provided an overview of the ongoing Government efforts, noting key areas such as drought response and risk management; innovation in irrigation and water harvesting; response to deforestation and sandstorms; and land surveillance, and expressed the government's appreciation of the FAO's role in Iraq.

The President and the Director-General agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation focusing on land and water management and productivity, deforestation, and climate change.

The meeting was also attended by H.E. Abbas Jabr Ubadah Al-Alawiy Minister for Agriculture of Iraq.
