Director-General and Mongolia’s Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry discuss rural export potential at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture

17 January 2020, Berlin – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and Mongolia’s Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Chultem Ulaan, discussed the country’s agricultural export potential when they met at the 2020 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture in Berlin today.

Minister Chultem Ulaan told the Director-General the number of livestock in the country had grown to 70 million last year and crop harvests had also done well in 2019. He said the Government intended to improve animal health and sustainability.

Director-General Qu recommended Mongolia increase its collaboration with FAO and its neighbors in order to unleash the potential of its rural sector. The pair agreed innovation was the key in advancing animal health, plant production, marketing, and training and FAO was ready to contribute to that development.

The Director-General commended the strategy for Mongolia’s agriculture. The minister said that the country had completed its e-agriculture strategy and would appreciate FAO’s assistance in implementing the strategy once it was approved. 

The Minister also confirmed his participation in the upcoming FAO Regional Conference in Bhutan for the Asia and Pacific region.
