Director-General and the Minister for Health of Brazil discussed ways of improving people’s diets

14 October 2019, Rome – FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu met today with Luiz Henrique Mandetta, Minister for Health of Brazil, on the margins of the 46th Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

During their talks, the Director-General mentioned new measures being implemented in the Organization, including the improvement of staff work conditions, the creation of a more digital FAO and the enhancement of transparency with Member Countries. He also expressed his determination to further focus on eradicating hunger and improving the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities.

Minister Mandetta, for his part highlighted the increasing levels of overweight and obesity in Brazil and presented some actions to address this issue, such as promoting informative labelling of food products, combating sedentary lifestyles and lowering the consumption of sodium and sugar.

The FAO Director-General underscored the fact that people should also be encouraged to adopt adequate and balanced consumption patterns, combining different kinds of food, for healthier diets.
