Egypt and FAO agree to strengthen collaboration to boost agriculture

22 September 2019, New York – FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu today met President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt for talks that focused on working together to improve the agricultural sectors in the country and in Africa as a whole.

El-Sisi, who is also the current Chairperson of the African Union, noted that cooperation between the continent’s countries had yet to be fully explored and said he looked forward to support from FAO in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The FAO Director-General noted the need to improve infrastructure as a way to boost the development of agriculture, along with innovation, digital technologies and better water efficiency.

Qu also stressed the role of Triangular Cooperation to address this and other issues including capacity-building and strengthening value and supply chains.

Finally, the FAO Director-General welcomed President El-Sisi to Rome to FAO’s headquarters.
