FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, meets UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, Ambassador Peter Thomson

Rome - The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, had a meeting with Ambassador Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, at the sideline of the 35th Session of FAO Committee on Fisheries (5 – 9 September 2022).

Ambassador Thomson appreciated the crucial role of FAO in supporting the United Nations Ocean Conference held in Lisbon in  June 2022 and the continued support of FAO to the implementation of SDG14 through Blue Transformation, which has the potential to enhance food systems under water and feed the world's growing population sustainably. 

The Director appreciated the leadership of Ambassador Thomson and his crucial role in the success of the United Nations Ocean Conference and reiterated FAO's continued support for achieving SDG14 using science-based innovative solutions.

QU expressed FAO's readiness to further support Members in implementing the outcomes of the United Nations Ocean Conference and achieving the high potential of Blue Transformation, including building momentum for action in international fora, including COP27 and the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15).

The Director-General and Ambassador Thomson agreed to continue their coordination, particularly in supporting the achievement of SDG14.
