FAO Director-General and Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Seafood agree on the need to better manage world marine resources

18 November 2019, Rome - FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu met today with Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Seafood Harald T. Nesvik, on the sidelines of the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability hosted this week (18-21 November) at FAO headquarters in Rome.

Both agreed on the urgent need to better manage the world’s marine resources, which are under threat from the impact of climate change, pollution and unsustainable use. Addressing these challenges is essential in order to preserve marine resources for future generations.

They both highlighted the opportunities to significantly improve post-harvest measures in fisheries to reduce food loss, optimise energy consumption and contribute to making the food system more sustainable.

The FAO Director-General and Norway’s Minister for Fisheries and Seafood stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation when managing and protecting marine resources.  

Both agreed on the increasing relevance of FAO in ensuring that sustainable fisheries management is at the forefront of the international development agenda.
