FAO Director-General and President of the World Farmer's Organization highlight the critical role of innovation and e-commerce

18 October 2019, Rome - FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu met today with Theo De Jager, President of the World Farmer's Organization, on the sidelines of the 46th Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

During the talks, the President of the World Farmer’s Organization congratulated the Director-General on his election and wished him a successful tenure. They both agreed on the importance of innovation in agriculture, particularly to attract the interest of younger generations.

The Director-General highlighted the strong need to provide infrastructure and facilitate market access for smallholder farmers, especially through e-commerce, which would also encourage the production of safe and nutritious food following the international standards set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

They also discussed ways to work more closely together, further strengthening collaboration and ensuring a continuous dialogue.
