FAO Director-General meets with the Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs

Beijing - FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today met H.E. Tang Renjian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing.

The Director-General recognized China's many achievements in agricultural and rural development, and commended the Chinese government for its consistent support to FAO. The Director-General further highlighted that the Chinese government has made a vital contribution to achieving food security at both national and global levels, and conveyed FAO’s willingness to deepen cooperation with China in a holistic manner in the field of food and agriculture to support achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Minister Tang Renjian congratulated Dr. QU’s on his achievements since taking office as the Director-General of FAO, and recognized the key role FAO is playing in improving global food governance and its important contribution to world food security and sustainable agricultural development. The Minister further reaffirmed that China firmly upholds the role and status of FAO in global food governance and will continue to provide strong support to FAO to maintain world food security. China is also willing to deepen practical cooperation with FAO in the fields of South-South and Triangular Cooperation in agriculture, dynamic conservation of Global Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), and prevention and control of animal diseases.

The Director-General briefed the Minister about FAO reforms and flagship initiatives, which have been undertaken since he took office in August 2019. The Director-General highlighted that under the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 these initiatives will support Members to implement the 2030 Agenda through the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
