26 September 2019, New York – In talks today with Marco Vinicio Cerezo, Secretary General of the Central American Integration System (SICA), FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu reiterated the UN Agency’s commitment to development in the region, particularly in the agricultural sectors.

During their meeting on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Vinicio Cerezo congratulated Qu Dongyu for taking up his position and expressed the hope that FAO and SICA will strengthen their collaboration. He noted the urgency required to tackle issues of malnutrition in the region.

The FAO Director-General outlined the agency’s new Hand-In-Hand initiative, which prioritizes targeted work that benefits people in the world’s most vulnerable regions including small island developing states, least developed and landlocked countries.

Qu invited SICA to play a role in the initiative and the parties agreed to explore ways to work together more closely on a regional level.
