FAO can assist Nicaragua with efforts to develop its forestry sector

26 September 2019, New York – FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu today met Paul Oquist, Minister Private Secretary for National Policies of the President of the Republic of Nicaragua, on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly.

During their discussion, Oquist described Nicaragua’s intention set up a national fund to channel, investments, particularly from the private sector, to boost the country’s forestry sector.

Qu said FAO would be willing to assist with this through the UN agency’s expertise in forestry, and both parties agreed that Nicaragua has a strong potential to explore and further develop agri-forestry initiatives, with Oquist pointing to those involving coffee, cocoa and the rubber plant.
