Read-out of the FAO Director-General's meeting with Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General, Minister for Agro-Industry and Food Security of the Republic of Mauritius

Rome - FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today met with Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General, Minister for Agro-Industry and Food Security of the Republic of Mauritius.

The Minister expressed his appreciation for the support and long standing partnership with FAO. The Minister also provided special thanks for technical assistance on the ongoing Tea Sector Strategic Plan. He then shared with the Director-General an overview of the animal health services and the need for technical assistance from FAO through FAO South South Cooperation. Specifically he requested support to the veterinary services possibly from neighboring countries, perhaps Zimbabwe or Madagascar. 

The Director-General welcomed the Minister and congratulated him on the work being done in the agricultural sectors. The Director-General also shared with the Minister his views on agrifood system transformation through technical assistance and how FAO can continue to support Mauritius.

The two also discussed Food loss and waste. In this regard, the Minister shared with the Director-General the recent initiative in Mauritius, which he undertook with the private sector namely the hospitality industry, to reduce this phenomenon. The Director-General commended the Minister on the work done and shared with him examples of how this can be tackled. The two agreed to explore further how best to cooperate in this regard.
