Read-out of the FAO Director-General’s meeting with Dr Abbasali Nobakht, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Rome - The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, had a meeting with Dr Abbasali Nobakht, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Islamic Republic of Iran, on the sidelines of the 26th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO) that is taking place from 3 to 7 October 2022.

The Director-General reiterated FAO's continued support to the agrifood system in the Islamic Republic of Iran, referring in particular to the ongoing cooperation with Iran's Forests, Range and Watershed Management Organization to catalyse investments and actions to enhance the agriculture sector's resilience to sand and dust storms.

The Deputy Minister appreciated FAO’s continued support to the agriculture sector in Iran and provided an overview of the ongoing efforts by the Government to promote climate-resilient forestry and sustainable water management programmes as part of the country's overall forest management system.

The Director-General and the Deputy Minister agreed on the importance of continued efforts to address the challenges posed by sand and dust storms through regional cooperation and science-based approaches that facilitate the exchange of knowledge, data and best practices, and combine short and long-term interventions.
