Read-out of the FAO Director-General’s meeting with Mahamat Gueillet Hemchi, Advisor for Agriculture and Livestock to the President of the Republic of Chad

Rome - Director-General QU Dongyu and Mahamat Gueillet Hemchi, Advisor for Agriculture and Livestock to the President of the Republic of Chad, met today at FAO headquarters.

Advisor Gueillet Hemchi thanked the Director-General and FAO for the ongoing strategic partnership and support to the government. In particular, he noted the support provided following the floods in 2022, as well as to the animal health sector for the launch of the Peste des Petits Ruminants Global Eradication Programme (PPR GEP).

The Director-General expressed his appreciation to the Advisor for the good collaboration with Chad and shared with him the importance of disease control, food security and linkages with animal health, as well as capacity development and the FAO Hand-in-Hand Initiative to develop the country’s investment plans strategically. The pair also discussed animal production and health and their related value chains, as well as the Government’s emphasis on One Health support needs.

The discussion also focused on the importance of youth and women empowerment in the agriculture sector and how to best to support them through capacity development. The Director-General invited Chad to participate in the FAO Global Conference on Mechanization to be held in September 2023, in light of the completion of the National Investment Plan for the Rural Sector, and the Agriculture Mechanization Strategy.
