Read-out of the FAO Director-General’s meeting with the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda

Rome – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today met the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, on the sidelines of the World Food Forum (WFF).

The Director-General thanked the President for Poland’s longstanding support to FAO, and for having hosted the 33rd Session of FAO’s Regional Conference for Europe (ERC) that took place in May this year in the city of Lodz.

The Director-General commended Poland for the successful modernization of its agrifood systems and highlighted that the country is an example for Europe and the world.

The President thanked the Director-General for his invitation to address the World Food Forum and for providing an open platform for discussion. He expressed his concern about the current food security situation and the impact of high energy and fertilizer prices on agriculture production, underlining that Poland is and will remain dedicated to help fight hunger and poverty, and reach the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Director-General mentioned FAO’s proposal for a Global Food Import Financing Facility (FIFF) as an emergency measure to help the most vulnerable countries, and informed the President that the IMF had recently approved a Food Shock Window as part of the IMF emergency financing instruments.

The President commended FAO for providing support to countries and regions with food security problems and called for more solidarity in the collective fight against hunger and poverty, and to ensure stable food supplies.
