Read-out of the bilateral meeting between FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and Minister of Agriculture of Uzbekistan, Jamshid Khodjaev

28 July 2021, Rome - The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and Minister of Agriculture of Uzbekistan, Jamshid Khodjaev, met to strengthen the collaboration between FAO and Uzbekistan.

The Minister of Agriculture underlined the importance of FAO in transforming agri-food systems. He valued FAO as a global multilateral platform to build capacity, provide professional assistance, exchange views, create consensus and solve problems. The new digital FAO allowed not only Uzbekistan, but many colleague Ministers, to discuss virtually on issues related to food and agriculture. He went on to commend the Director-General for the new FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 that is well aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Director-General informed that the Strategic Framework highlighted the importance of a transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems. And he indicated the new digital FAO that has been created in the last 2 years, with a positive, pragmatic and transparent approach.

The Director-General indicated that FAO as a neutral platform can be used by Members to share knowledge and create partnerships. He named experience sharing of landlocked countries as a good example where Uzbekistan could take a leading role.

The Director-General thanked Minister Khodjaev again for the continued support of Uzbekistan and for hosting the virtual FAO Regional Conference for Europe that took place online in November 2020. The Minister underlined the intention of Uzbekistan to play a leading role in the region on issues related to food and agriculture, such as food security, food monitoring and sustainable agri-food systems.

The Minister mentioned that the Pre-Summit underlined again the crucial role of FAO and the Rome Based Agencies to provide the ingredients for transformation to sustainable agri-food systems, based on consensus and political commitments.
