Read-out of the meeting between FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and H.E. Said Hussein, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Republic of Somalia

Today, 22 June 2021, the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, had a virtual meeting with H.E. Said Hussein, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The Director-General welcomed the Minister, who expressed his appreciation for the strengthened cooperation and partnership of his country with the Organization.

The Minister thanked the Director-General for the opportunity to meet and updated him on progress in the ongoing Desert Locust operations, as well as on long-term flood mitigation and irrigation management solutions made. He welcomed the move from emergency rehabilitation to development support being provided by the organization. The Minister was also pleased to report on results achieved with regards to capacity building and knowledge sharing.   

The Director-General thanked the Minister for his participation at the 42nd Session of the FAO Conference and noted that participation at governing body sessions is crucial to ensure an inclusive dialogue amongst Members and with the Organization.

The Director-General welcomed the updates shared and noted that while positive results were achieved in relation to Desert Locust continued control is important to avoid future upsurges. He reiterated the importance of ensuring that response needs are linked to capacity development.

The Director-General stressed the need to strengthen irrigation management to mitigate floods. He also underscored FAO’s commitment to continuing strong cooperation through the Country Programming Framework (CPF) 2021-2025.
