South Sudan prioritizes food security with FAO support

28 August 2019, Yokohama – James Wani Igga, South Sudan’s Vice President stressed his country’s willingness to work closely with FAO in talks today with the UN agency’s Director-General, Qu Dongyu, on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).

“Food is the government priority in a country with 95 percent of arable land. We have the areas available to grow food but we need seeds, tools and machineries, and FAO’s support to achieve self-sufficiency,” said the South Sudanese Vice President.

South Sudan’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Onyotti Adigo Nyikwac, who also participated in the meeting, stressed that “to achieve the national development agenda, agriculture is crucial.”

Qu reiterated FAO’s commitment to help the population of South Sudan through capacity building, investments, innovation and technology.
