UN’s Right-to-Food Special Rapporteur meets with FAO’s Director-General

15 October 2019, Rome - FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu thanked Hilal Elver, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, for her work over the past five years and the global visibility she has brought to an important area of FAO’s work.

Ms. Elver told the Director-General her successor will start in April 2020, and she will use the coming months to consolidate her work since being appointed in 2014.

The Director-General briefed Ms Elver on the Youth and Women Committee, recently established at FAO, and elaborated on the importance of the role of women both in the Organization and on the ground around the world.

Women form the majority of the work force in the agriculture sector and rural areas, and improving their condition would directly contribute to improving food security and nutrition,  therefore realization of human’s right to adequate, accessible, affordable, nutritious and safe food, Qu said.
