Bilateral Meeting with H.E. Nadir Larbaoui Prime Minister of Algeria and H.E Ahmed Attaf, Minister for Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad

Algiers - As part of his official visit to Algeria, the FAO Director-General QU Dongyu met in Algiers with H.E. Nadir Larbaoui, Prime Minister of Algeria, and H.E Ahmed Attaf, Minister for Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad.

The Director-General appreciated the growing cooperation between FAO and Algeria and thanked the Government of Algeria for its continued and robust support to the Organization. The Director-General provided an update of the reforms undertaken in FAO to enhance its efficiency and its support to global agrifood systems transformation.

H.E the Prime Minister stressed the key role of FAO in supporting sustainable development in Algeria, and the Foreign Minister highlighted the Government efforts to increase agricultural production and food security, not only in Algeria but in neighboring countries as well. They also stressed the importance of South-South Cooperation as one of the key priorities of the Government, referring to the role of the National Agency of International Cooperation in this regard.

The Algerian Officials appreciated the achievements of FAO, highlighting, in particular, the role of the Organization in supporting developing countries facing the increasing challenges affecting agrifood systems and food security as a result of the impacts of the climate crisis and the disruptions in supply chains.

The Algerian Officials and the Director-General agreed to continue discussions between the two sides to support national strategic objectives and efforts to increase agricultural and fisheries productivity, increase food security, and improve water management, as well as to promote South-South Cooperation in priority countries.
