Bilateral meeting with the State Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment of Honduras, H.E. Lucky Medina

Tegucigalpa, Honduras - During his visit to Honduras, FAO Director-General, Qu Dongyu, met with H.E. Lucky Medina, State Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of Honduras. The Minister of the National Institute of Forest Conservation (ICF), H.E. Luis Soliz, was also present at the meeting. 

Minister Medina stressed the relevance given by the Government to the policies related to the environment, ecosystems, the protection of flora and fauna, and the control of pollution in all its forms.

Ministers Medina and Soliz emphasized that 56 percent of Honduras' territory is covered by forests. They also stressed the need to transition from deforestation to food security by implementing replacement crops.

The Director-General suggested digital monitoring to support the recovery of local communities through economically viable products like fruits and ornamental plants and improving the economic viability of agroforestry practices with fast-growing forests like bamboo.

The Director-General also stressed that the Dry Corridor needs the involvement of all members affected to obtain a viable project that transforms a Dry Corridor into a green corridor.

The participants reiterated their collective will to strengthen the partnership with the Organization and pledged to join forces and work together towards reaching common objectives.
