Rio de Janeiro – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, on his visit to Brazil to attend the G20 foreign ministers' meeting, paid a visit to the headquarters of the Brazilian Association of the Coffee Industry (ABIC) in Rio de Janeiro.

The Director General was welcomed by ABIC President Pavel Cardoso, who took him on a tour of the building, recounting the Association's 50 years of existence, its goals, and its work with coffee farmers.

Established in 1973, ABIC today represents coffee roasting and milling industries across the nation. Its mission is to foster the growth of the Brazilian coffee industry through continuous quality enhancement and consumer education.

In 1989, ABIC created the Permanent Coffee Purity Control Program (PPCPC) to improve the quality of coffee in the domestic market and increase consumption.

During the visit, Qu stressed the importance of promoting coffee consumption through dialogue among producing countries. He further emphasized that coffee production should prioritize environmental sustainability and the benefit of small farmers.

The Director-General also visited the Museum of Tomorrow, a futuristic 15,000-square-meter facility that explores the opportunities and challenges facing humanity in the coming decades from the perspective of sustainability and conviviality.
