EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION SURVEY ACTION PLAN

VIDEO MESSAGE BY

DR QU DONGYU, FAO DIRECTOR-GENERAL

15 JULY 2021

Dear Colleagues,

1.         At FAO, our employees are our greatest asset, and the heart of our Organization.

2.         I have translated this belief into action since my first day as FAO Director-General.

3.         One of my starting priorities was improving internal governance and establishing workplace harmony.

4.         To create “One FAO Family”.

5.         So, for the first time in ten years, we asked you to participate in an Employee Satisfaction Survey.

6.         I appointed DDG Bechdol as our Survey Champion, to coordinate and personally engage with you in this exercise.

7.         The results showed that there is work to be done!

8.         To get started, we created an Employee Engagement Survey Task Force – the E2S Task Force.

9.         This team of 15 employees reflected FAO’s diversity –

10.       in gender, age, office location, nationality, contract type and tenure.

11.       They turned your concerns into solutions in the Employee Satisfaction Corporate Action Plan.

12.       The plan is centered on professional development, new ways of working, an ethical workplace and improved communication.

13.       I am happy to see that many changes are already underway as early harvest.

14.       We secured additional insurance coverage for the affiliate workforce at the beginning of the year for maternity leave and breaks in service.

15.       I have also endorsed extended paternity leave.

16.       And, just last week, we reintroduced the Language Allowance for General Service Staff.

17.       These actions are all steps forward along the path of change.

Dear Colleagues,

18.       We are building an agile, inclusive and transparent FAO.

19.       A modern and digital Organization.

20.       We are strengthening relations with Staff Representatives.

21.       We are reinforcing ethical behavior,

22.       through the Taskforce for the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Sexual Harassment,

23.       and with the Ethics and Ombudsman’s offices.

24.       Together we can help achieve a better world and improve lives.

25.       We are united in our commitment to our noble mission and Mandate, and

26.       we must be united in our commitment to one another.

27.       For this reason, I want to ensure a positive work environment and provide the right leadership for you to thrive.

28.       FAO is changing!

29.       A famous proverb says: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.

30.       The second best time is now.

31.       And now is the time to act.

32.       Thank you.
