LAUNCH OF UN DECADE ON ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION -
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - PAKISTAN
VIDEO MESSAGE BY
DR. QU DONGYU, FAO DIRECTOR-GENERAL
5 JUNE 2021
- The COVID 19 pandemic has put the spotlight on the critical role of healthy ecosystems and the services they provide.
- But pressure on natural resources is increasing.
- Degraded ecosystems affect the well-being of 3.2 billion people – that is 40% of the world’s population - increasing poverty and food insecurity.
- It is time to move from crisis to recovery.
- FAO is proud to co-lead the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which is a unique opportunity for restoring harmony with nature;
- by showing it the reverence it deserves;
- while feeding the world in a sustainable manner.
- Bringing degraded ecosystems back to sustainable production will help provide the food we need, leaving no one behind.
- New sustainable agriculture opportunities could generate almost 80 million jobs by 2030, with more than 90% of them located in developing nations.
- Transforming agri-food and land-use systems could create new business opportunities worth up to USD 4.5 trillion a year by 2030.
- This year’s World Environment Day slogan “RE-IMAGINE. RE-CREATE. RESTORE” defines the role we all have to play.
- We must take bold actions, like Pakistan’s ambitious 10 Billion Tree initiative that combines community participation, green job creation, and strong political commitment.
- Let us join forces to restore ecosystems and ensure better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all!
