Launch Event of the International Year
for the Elimination of Child Labour (2021)
PLEDGE MESSAGE OF
FAO DIRECTOR-GENERAL, Dr QU Dongyu
As prepared
1. FAO pledges to intensify its work addressing child labour in agriculture through a dedicated work program within the corporate Strategic Framework.
2. To achieve SDG 8.7 we need a breakthrough in agriculture where child labour is frequently found.
3. This year, we will step-up our efforts to strengthen the capacities of a wide range of agricultural actors to include child labour prevention and youth employment in their work.
4. Policies, programs, and investments related to agri-food systems need to address the root causes of child labour, including household poverty.
5. We will organize a series of FAO regional consultations among agricultural actors and a Global Event in November 2021 on Child Labour in Agriculture to increase awareness of the many good practices and promising experiences.
6. The related outcomes will constitute a significant contribution on the important role of agriculture and the broader agri-food systems to the Fifth Global Conference on Child Labour in 2022.
7. FAO will continue to play a central role in the International Partnership for Cooperation on Child Labour in Agriculture.
8. Throughout the year, we will strengthen existing collaboration and seek new partners to jointly scale-up our efforts.
9. Thank you.
