One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance

Closing Remarks by FAO Director-General Dr Qu Dongyu

27 January 2021

As prepared

1. Excellency Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, I would like to thank you for being an outstanding chair of this inaugural meeting.

2. Your dedication was fundamental to the success of this meeting. The fruitful discussion so far is encouraging that together we can find a way forward for the Global Leaders. This could not be achieved without your outstanding leadership.

3. My appreciation also extends to the co-chair Excellency Sheikh Hasina Wazed, Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Her words, thoughts and encouragement have been inspiring and invaluable.

4. And I would like to thank all the distinguished members of the Global Leaders Group.

5. In the past two days, you have demonstrated vision and determination to achieve the goal of reducing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

6. I see all of you stepping forward and shouldering the responsibility. You have demonstrated the leadership that is vital for winning the battle against AMR.

7. Your views and recommendations matter. With your help, the Tripartite can achieve a greater impact on the ground.

8. The identified key performance indicators are more powerful than any words and demonstrate our commitment to fight against AMR. Promote championship in your own outreach and assistance to the members.

9. I re-iterate the commitment of FAO to the work of establishing the Independent Science Panel and the Partnership Platform, and have committed USD 500 000 to assist in establishing the Partnership Platform.

10. I look forward to the continued exchange with the DGs of WHO and OIE at the upcoming Executive Session of the Tripartite.

11. FAO as chair of the One Health Tripartite from March 2021 to February 2022, is committed to work for a common programme - together, and with the engagement of UNEP.

12. Your leadership and consultation have proved to be fundamental in making One Health collaboration stronger than ever before.

13. When we are united and with a shared vision, we are undefeatable and powerful. Just like adding one small stick to another; and at the end we can have a big fire.

14. Today is not the ending point. Today we embark on a journey together to make All for One Health - and One Health for All come true. I am proud to be part of this group and look forward to witnessing the great that we will achieve as Global Leaders.

Thank you.
