Lisak, J. Establishing fish receiving/distribution centres in Nepal. Integrated Fishery and Fish Culture Development Project, Nepal. Rome, FAO, 1979.23 p. Field Document. FI:DP/NEP/73/025/7

ABSTRACT

The increasing demand for fish by the people of Nepal and by increasing numbers of tourists is not being met partly because of inadequate marketing facilities. This report describes the assembling and placing in operation of cool chambers and other equipment and establishing of fish receiving and distribution centres initiated previously by the FAO project, as a first step in establishing a “cold chain” between main fish production and consumer centres.

Work accomplished in converting existing fish receiving/distribution centres or establishing new ones is described, with the problems encountered and their solutions. Included are details of equipment and facilities and their installation and utilization, such as the buildings, processing facilities and procedures and refrigeration equipment.

The three fish receiving and distribution centres established are located at Pokhara, Balaju-Kathmandu and Hetauda and another is being constructed at Bhairawa, Specifications are given and drawings illustrate the centres and the equipment.

Fish production is expected to increase in Nepal as is the demand for fish and recommendations include continual supervision of maintaining the freshness of fish and sanitation procedures during the entire processing and distribution chain, and further, establishment of previously proposed retail fish shops at Pokhara, Kathmandu and Hetauda.
