Synopsis (short abstract) Promoting self-reliant livelihoods of Syrian refugee and Turkish host communities through entrepreneurship in food and agriculture in Turkey The project funded by the Government of Japan supported both Syrian refugee and local Turkish communities to create new sources of income in food and agricultral sector. The project found three agri-food products which have strong and stable consumer demand in local markets and provided the project participants with trainings and equipment to establish small-scale production cooperatives. The cooperatives found local buyers of their products and continued to sell their products after the completion of the project in March 2020. As of June 2020, 48 percent of them successfully gained new income sources.

    This Impact Report lists the achievements made under the "Promoting self-reliant livelihoods through employment and micro-entrepreneurship" project funded by the Government of Japan. The project supported the establishment of micro-scale agri-businesses under the umbrella of two women’s cooperatives. 76 percent of project participants gained new sources of income in the agri-food sector after participating in the project. One of the cooperatives successfully used e-commerce platforms to market their products during the challenging conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The topic of demographic change in fishing communities has received little attention. Available studies date back to the 1990s, such as the macro-level studies conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Demographic change in fishing communities has implications for the future of fishing, fisheries, the fishing industry, and the social development of fishing communities in the Asian region. This publication looks at demographic change in small-scale fishing communities to understand potential implications for fisheries sustainability, migration patterns, climate change adaptation, and livelihoods diversification. The publication explores the general question: How are fishing communities in the region changing with demographic changes? Specifically the publication tries to address the following questions: (1) What are the changes in demography (ageing, migration) in selected Asian fishing communities? (2) How are fishers adjusting their livelihoods with the changes in fishery resources and labour availability? Are they moving to other livelihoods? (3) What are the consequences of these adaptation strategies? Are there any gender differences in the impact of such adaptation strategies? (4) What are the challenges faced and policy and programme support needed for fishing communities for sustainable small-scale fisheries?
