Safeguard measures
Description
Imposed safeguard measures on selected classes of semi/wholly milled rice (CN codes 10063027, 10063048, 10063067 and 10063098) imported from Cambodia and Myanmar, which had hitherto enjoyed duty- and quota-free access to the EU market under the Everything-But-Arms (EBA) agreement. The decision reinstated a temporary import tariff of EUR 175 (USD 198) per tonne on these classes, effective from 18 January 2019. This rate would be reduced in equal instalments over a three-year period until it reached EUR 125 (USD 141) per tonne, but would not be applied to supplies en route to the EU at the time of the decision's entry into force. Moreover, the import tariff would be adjusted downwards, in the event that the European Commission decides to lower Common Customs Tariffs on semi/wholly milled rice.
