Approved GM-soy variety ‘HB4’ for commercial use, reckoning that farmer access to the drought- and herbicide-tolerant variety had the potential to boost the country’s area under soybean cultivation.

PARAGUAY – GM-soy approval: In November, Paraguay – the world’s fourth largest exporter of soybeans – joined the list of countries that approved GM-soy variety ‘HB4’ for commercial use (see MPPU July’19). Industry sources reckon that farmer access to the drought and herbicide tolerant variety has the potential to almost double the country’s area under soybean cultivation. Reportedly, the variety’s commercial launch will be delayed until China, the world’s largest buyer of soybeans, authorizes its importation.
