Description
Announced that it would extend a pilot programme encouraging production of high quality rice through direct payments to twenty townships during the first crop cycle of 2017. Direct outlays to farmers participating under the scheme would be set at NTD 13 500 (USD 423) per hectare for the 2017 first crop, up from NTD 10 000 (USD 314) per hectare offered for the 2016 second crop, with an additional NTD 1 500 (USD 47) per hectare extended to producers that also opt to participate in Rice Production Clusters. The direct payments are intended as an alternative to price guarantees under the state\'s procurement programmes, although farmers participating in the pilot scheme who face difficulties in marketing their produce and do not participate in rice production clusters can still opt to forgo direct payments and sell supplies to the state instead.
