Description
While the Austrian Parliament reviewed a motion to restrict certain uses of glyphosate-based herbicides, including pre-harvest treatments of agricultural crops, Brazil adopted new MRLs for glyphosate, and Germany issued legislation to phase out the sale and use of glyphosate by the end of 2023. Furthermore, Brazil, Japan and the United States adopted or proposed new MRLs for various other pesticides used in the cultivation of soybeans and other oilcrops. In the EU, MRLs for a wide range of pesticides entered into force in May 2021.

Multiple countries – pesticide regulation: Glyphosate: In March, the Austrian Parliament considered a motion to restrict certain uses of glyphosate-based herbicides, including pre-harvest treatments of agricultural crops (see also MPPU Sep.’19). Furthermore, Brazil adopted MRLs (maximum residue limits tolerated in food/feed products) for glyphosate, while Germany’s Environment Ministry issued legislation to phase out the sale and use of glyphosate by the end of 2023. Until that date, in Germany, the use of glyphosate-based herbicides will be subject to a number of restrictions (see also MPPU Sep.’19). Various pesticides: In the European Union, MRLs for a wide range of pesticides are set to enter into force in May 2021, while also Brazil, Japan and the United States of America adopted or proposed new MRLs for a number of pesticides used in the cultivation of soybeans and other oilcrops.
