FAO in Egypt

FAO Egypt at COP27

Hybrid Event, Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt), 6- 18 November, 2022

With the conclusion of COP26 in Glasgow, Egypt assumed the role as host of COP27, to be held in Sharm El-Sheik on 7-18 November 2022. The opportunity to scale up climate-resilient agri-food sector priorities of regional member states during Egypt’s turn to host the COP is substantial. Egypt hosts the FAO Egypt country office and the FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE). The agri-food sector is Egypt’s third-largest economic sector, employing 20.6 percent (2019) of the working population.

These position Egypt well to highlight the critical needs of the region related to climate change and agri-food during the year of its leadership. These include promoting climate-smart agricultural practices to address water scarcity, heat and drought under projected climate change scenarios, preventing food loss and waste, and address the degradation of valuable natural resources such as soil and water. FAO is in a position to take a lead for the member countries during COP27 to catalyze visibility on climate change, water and agri-food and build a community of practice of NENA practitioners.
