08/07/2024

Cairo, Egypt – The United Nations recognize that unsustainable food systems must be transformed to become more sustainable if the global community is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations Agencies together with the private sector and other relevant stakeholders need to take a new approach in order to reach the SDGs targets.

The United Nations in Egypt, in partnership with the private sector, is intensifying efforts to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Regional Office for the Near East, in collaboration with the Country Office in Egypt, hosted today a pivotal meeting to advance this mission.

More than thirty participants attended the meeting representing 10 private companies, 2 NGOs and 7 United Nations Agencies.

Participants discussed on the opportunities for joint initiatives considering the regulatory and policy framework, capacity building programmes that would reinforce the transformative investment as well as identifying bankable projects.

They also discussed de-risking the agriculture and the entire food system in order to turn that industry into a more attractive one for investors and private sector that would not only invest but also consolidate the sector and make more attractive for all the stake holders including the small farmers.

Representatives highlighted the need to strengthen collaboration between the private sector and the United Nations on food systems from policy level to the intervention in the field, and create linkages between producers and manufactures ensuring a green supply chain.

FAO’s leadership in hosting this event underscores its critical role in fostering impactful collaborations that drive sustainable development and prosperity for all. This meeting represents a significant opportunity to solidify partnerships, align efforts, and create targeted initiatives ensuring lasting progress for Egypt.
