FAO and Sweden, supporting farmers affected by drought and desert locust in Somalia

Agriculture plays a key role in Somalia’s economy, but rural farmers, like Hibo, are increasingly under pressure.

Many are forced to move away from home in order to find work. 

With generous funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, FAO is supporting farmers in areas affected by drought and desert locust making them less likely to move away in search of work. 

During the cropping season, FAO delivered planting packages, with drought-resistant seeds that provide families with sources of food, income, and fodder from crop residues for the livestock. 

The packages are tailored to farmer’s needs and local traditional practices.

Farmers also received cash assistance to meet short-term needs. 

Tractor tilling hours helped farmers to maximize their productive land.
