FAO East Africa: The Battle Against Locust

East Africa has scored big wins in its battle against the largest invasion of , locust in living memory: more than 2 million hectares of land surveyed and treated.

  • 4.1 million metric tonnes of crops protected from destruction.
  • Over 800 million litres of milk losses prevented.
  • USD 1.58 billion in crop and dairy production safeguarded.
  • A potential invasion of West Africa averted.
  • National locust response capacities strengthened.

Working together we have beaten back the locusts. But if climatic conditions should spark another upsurge, East Africa is ready.

Together we are initiating efforts to safeguard livelihoods to the most vulnerable communities.
