16 June 2017, Addis Ababa – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has donated over 10 000 books and knowledge products to academic institutions in efforts of creating access to resources and information on food security and agriculture for students and researchers

FAO serves as a knowledge base since its establishment in 1948. Knowledge and information that aid development are generated and shared using a range of its experts - agronomists, foresters, fisheries and livestock specialists, nutritionists, social scientists, economists, statisticians and other professionals. As indicated in its constitution, the organization collects, analyses, interprets and disseminates knowledge and information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture.

As part of making FAO resources accessible to academic institutions, FAO resource center has donated more than 10 000 books and periodicals to seven regional universities and three resource centers. The books are on the subjects of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, Food Security, Rural Development, Plant Production and Protection, Animal Production and Health, Agro-industries, Agro-forestry, Climate Change, Fisheries, Sustainable Development, Statistics and Agricultural Economics.

Expressing FAO’s commitment, Amadou Allahoury, FAO Representative to Ethiopia said,  “We are committed to continually enrich and add value to the organization’s knowledge sharing, by providing reliable access to high quality information resources and services to staff members, government, stakeholders, researchers and to university and college community,” during a handing over ceremony. He added; “I believe that this donation benefits the growing institutions in Ethiopia by making resources accessible to their students and academic communities.”

Takele Teshome, a representative from ASDA said, “The support adds important resource to our public library and contributes knowledge and information required to develop strategies to address food insecurity which our shared objective in Ethiopia.”

FAO has recently transformed its resource center into an online and virtual library. Resource center users can access the organization’s in-house databases via FAO Intranet and external database on CD-ROM or via the Internet that provides online access to publications, international scientific journals and online databases on food and agriculture and related subjects.

By turning knowledge into action, FAO links the field to national, regional and global initiatives in a mutually reinforcing cycle. The handing over will facilitate partnerships for food and nutrition security, agriculture and rural development between governments, development partners, civil society and the private sector.

FAO in Ethiopia has established a resource center in 2007 with the aim to make accessible the wealth of information and knowledge produced by FAO to external clients, partners and stakeholders.
