FMD Emergency Preparation Course (FEPC) University of Calgary

As part of the agreement that EuFMD signed with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for the delivery of FMD Emergency Preparation Course (FEPC) in 2022, both parties provided support to opening the same course for the University of Calgary students. EuFMD will provide support, pending minimal contribution from their side.  

The University of Calgary, department of Global Health and Infectious Diseases, has been identified in 2021 and a new edition is proposed for 20 students in 2022. The partnership was built through CFIA and as a resulting the FMD Emergency preparedness’s eLearning modules will be made available for the students. 

This activity is part of the accreditation of the EuFMD courses to University bodies, as part of workplan 1.1 objectives. 

After studying this course, students will be able to: 

  • explain the pathogenesis of FMD;
  • describe the clinical signs of FMD in cattle, small ruminants, and pigs;
  • describe how to age FMD lesions;
  • explain how to take correct diagnostic samples to enable laboratory confirmation of an FMD diagnosis;
  • explain how to conduct an epidemiological investigation on a premises where FMD is suspected/confirmed;
  • explain how to enter and leave a premises suspected of FMD in a biosecure manner;
  • describe key aspects of the control measures which are used in an FMD outbreak in a previously free country.
