Preparing for emergency vaccination against FAST diseases in European countries

14/06/2022 -
Online,

The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO),  will be hosting the second virtual workshop in the series on preparedness to use emergency vaccination in European countries on 14 June 2022.

In March 2022, the EuFMD conducted the first workshop in this series, to identify criteria that can be used to decide whether to implement emergency vaccination as a control measure for FAST diseases in the EuFMD Member Nations.

On 14 June 2022, participants will explore how the vaccination decision criteria from the first workshop, along with other disease control measures, influence the progression of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak scenarios modelled in four countries of Europe.

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Present an example of how modeling key decision criteria has influenced the consideration of different response options (including emergency vaccination) for contingency planning for FMD – Australia.
  • Compare how the decision to vaccinate, based on key decision criteria from workshop 1, affects simulated FMD outbreaks in selected European countries.
  • Discuss the modelling outcomes of selected control measures, including emergency vaccination, in different FMD scenarios in a European country.

The expected outcomes of this workshop series can be used to inform development of decision tools and contingency plans for implementing emergency vaccination, in combination with other control measures, in European countries currently free of FMD. The development of decision criteria initially focuses on FMD but could later be adapted to emergency vaccination for control of other FAST diseases.
